The Internet is revolutionising the financial industry. However, the Internet also poses a range of risks and threats.Financial institutions, governments and international organisations need to work together to manage these risks.Although progress has been made, it is critical that partnerships continue to be built in order to enhance consumertrust towards the Internet and e-business. Without this trust, online banks and financial providers will not delivertheir full potential.

Dr Andrew Rathmell is Executive Director ofthe International Centre for SecurityAnalysis (ICSA) and Senior Lecturer in theSchool of Social Science and Public Policy,King’s College London. He joined the Collegein July 1996 and organised the launch ofICSA in October 1996. ICSA is an interdisciplinaryresearch centre which conductsresearch on technology and public policyissues. In March 2000 Dr Rathmell launched the Information Assurance Advisory Council(IAAC), of which he is Chairman. A recipientof numerous academic and governmentgrants, he is currently Principal Investigatoron an ESRC project into Early Warning forcyber-threats, and the recipient of anEPSRC grant into fraud detection and aNATO Research Fellowship into CriticalInfrastructure Protection Policies. He is alsoa specialist adviser to the House of CommonsSelect Committee on Defence. He is aregular contributor to media outlets,including the BBC, Channel 4, ABC, CNN,Sky, The Economist, Jane’s IntelligenceReview and others. He is the author of anumber of monographs and numerous articlesin scholarly journals and in periodicals.
